- Now 5-HTP 100mg Vegetarian Capsules For Positive Mood & Neurotransmitter Support works by increasing synthesis of serotonin, a "feel good" neurotransmitter. 5-HTP, the intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and serotonin, is extracted from the seed of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia). 5-HTP supports the production of serotonin in the brain and central nervous system; serotonin can impact sleep, mood, appetite, and body temperature. Low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin are thought to contribute to a range of mental and physical health problems - such as depression, insomnia and obesity - so raising levels seems to be one way in which these issues can be managed. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation. 5-HTP is typically used to promote restful sleep because it supports the production of serotonin, which is in turn, converted to melatonin.
